Her cover story

Meet Laura

Ask Laura where she would rather be and the answer depends on the month: a ski lift in February, a hillside in Umbria in June, a saddle almost any other time. London catches her in between, and she wears it well. The frame is athletic, 169 cm of it; the hair is long, light brown and lightened by summer in stripes; the green eyes are full of mischief; the style is a breezy, garden-party elegance: a floral tea dress, a light trench, flat shoes she can stride in, and a straw hat she insists is practical.

Adventurous, warm and full of energy, Laura says yes to the walk, the extra course and the detour to see the view, usually before you have finished asking. She rides whenever she can get to the stables near Hyde Park, skis every winter and keeps a travel notebook devoted entirely to Italy, from Ligurian fishing villages to a truffle market she calls the best morning of her life. In her mid twenties, she speaks warm, animated English and has a laugh that carries across a courtyard.

For a Mayfair dinner she chooses The Guinea Grill on Bruton Place, a snug old pub dining room with dark panelling and the kind of steak and pie that suits someone who has been outdoors all day. She likes a booth, a good red and a long, rambling conversation about the best places you have both been. Afterwards she will happily walk it off through Berkeley Square before the short ride to your hotel.

Laura lives in Paddington, just across the park from Park Lane, and her diary tends to open by lunchtime on the day itself. See the rates page for every length of booking, then tell Bella where you are staying.

Laura is usually free from midday, which makes her ideal for a lingering lunch that drifts on past four, or for plans hatched that same morning. Late arrivals at Paddington hotels suit her too.

An evening with Laura

Laura does not believe in a quiet evening, only in a well-paced one. She might suggest meeting in the late afternoon for a stroll across Hyde Park while the light is still golden, then an early drink somewhere with a terrace. Dinner is hearty and cheerful, the kind of meal where you order pudding without apology, and the stories flow: the red run she took far too fast, the horse that refused a gate in Wiltshire, the pasta she ate on a harbour wall in Camogli. She wants to hear about your own trips too, and files away every place you mention. Back at your hotel she has usually planned your next holiday, and the evening ends in warm, easy laughter.

The interview

In Laura's own words

Three questions guests like to ask Laura before a first evening.

The park at nine in the morning, before the runners take over. Just you, the horse and the traffic sounding very far away.

Liguria, out of season. Take the little coastal train, get off wherever the sea looks bluest and eat focaccia on the harbour wall.

Braver, sadly. I always think I can take the steep line, and my knees usually disagree the next morning.

Notes on Laura

Laura's letters page is still blank, and it stays that way until a real guest writes in. Nothing here is ever written for her.

When a note does arrive, Bella reads every word first; we print a first name and the month, never more, and if Laura wants a note gone, it goes.
