Meet Vanessa
Cheers, salud, santé, prost: Vanessa can raise a glass in half a dozen languages and is always adding one more. It sums her up nicely: curious, relaxed and very easy to be around. She is 173 cm and slim, sandy brown hair falling long with a sunlit balayage, hazel eyes that shift with the light, and her style is understated coastal chic: a crisp white shirt, wide linen trousers, a navy cashmere jumper knotted over the shoulders.
Sweet-natured and genuinely curious, Vanessa asks questions because she wants the answers, and she remembers them. Languages are her passion, learned through podcasts, travel and conversations with anyone patient enough; fragrance is her quiet collection, a row of bottles, every one linked to a city or a friend; and cycling is how she clears her head, often a long loop through Hyde Park and Kensington Gardens before breakfast. In her mid twenties, she speaks soft, relaxed English with the occasional borrowed word when English simply will not do.
For Mayfair she likes Bentley's Oyster Bar and Grill on Swallow Street, just off Piccadilly, a warm, wood-panelled room with a marble counter where she can order oysters and practise her French on nobody in particular. If there is time beforehand, she might steer you round the corner to the old family perfumer Floris on Jermyn Street to test a scent or two.

An evening with Vanessa
Vanessa's evenings are relaxed and quietly delightful. She arrives unhurried, often with a new word she has just learned and wants to use in a sentence before the night is out. She likes to start with something simple, a glass of white and a plate of oysters, and let the conversation find its way. She is a wonderful listener, curious about your work, your travels and the languages you wish you had kept up. Somewhere along the way she may lean over and ask what you are wearing, meaning your cologne, and give a gentle verdict. Later, in the comfort of your suite, the calm deepens into something warm and close, and the hours pass far more easily than you expected.

Three questions guests like to ask Vanessa before a first evening.
Portuguese, slowly. The sounds are gorgeous, and after three months I can already order grilled sardines with real confidence.
A memory. I have a scent for a summer in Lisbon and one for a rainy Paris weekend. The bottle takes me straight back.
Kensington Gardens at seven is almost empty, just dog walkers and swans. By eight it belongs to everyone else, and I am home with coffee.
