Her cover story

Meet Jasmin

Three things to know about Jasmin, ranked in her own order of importance: she dances salsa, she mixes a very proper daiquiri, and she owns more perfume than shoes. The rest you will see for yourself. Petite at 160 cm, she has long chestnut brown hair that falls straight and shiny, warm brown eyes and a bubbly, boutique-hotel sort of chic: a slip dress in a jewel colour, a tiny bag, earrings that catch the light whenever she laughs, which is often.

Flirtatious in the old-fashioned, twinkly sense, Jasmin is endlessly curious about people. She wants to know what you do, why you do it and what you would do instead if nobody was watching. In her early twenties, she talks in quick, bright English and listens with her whole face. Mixology is her party trick, perfume her obsession, and salsa is where all that energy goes on a Thursday night. Nothing about her is careless, though: she picks up on moods fast and adjusts before you notice.

Her Mayfair evening starts with a detour to Ormonde Jayne in the Royal Arcade, if the door is still open, for a quick sniff of whatever is new. Then drinks at the Vesper Bar at The Dorchester, where the martinis arrive with a little ceremony and she will talk the bartender through her own twist on a classic. A late supper can follow, or the hotel can win outright. Jasmin is happy either way, as long as the glassware is good.

She lives in Soho and crosses to Bond Street and the Mayfair hotels in about ten minutes. Late starts suit her best; the rates page has every length of evening, and Bella will confirm her in writing.

An evening with Jasmin

Jasmin treats an evening like a tasting menu: small, bright courses, each one a surprise. The first might be a detour to try a new perfume on Old Bond Street, the second a drink she invents for you after two questions about your taste. At The Dorchester she likes a corner seat with a view of the bar, where she can study the bartenders' technique and murmur what she would have done differently. Somewhere in there she will teach you one salsa step, strictly one, and cheer when you get it right first time. Supper is optional, fun is not. By midnight she is barefoot in your suite, telling you which scent suits you and why, and she is usually right.

The interview

In Jasmin's own words

Three questions guests like to ask Jasmin before a first evening.

Something with vetiver, and less of it than he thinks. If I can smell it from across the table, he has been far too generous.

The humble daiquiri. It has no disguises at all, so a bartender who balances it perfectly can be trusted with anything on the menu.

Anywhere with a live band and a wooden floor. I am not fussy about the room, only about the rhythm section.

Letters page

Notes on Jasmin

Jasmin's letters page is still blank, and it stays that way until a real guest writes in. Nothing here is ever written for her.

When a note does arrive, Bella reads every word first; we print a first name and the month, never more, and if Jasmin wants a note gone, it goes.
