Karolina, in clean lines and quiet wit

Minimal, precise, faintly amused: if Karolina were a building, she would be all clean lines and unexpected light. Slim, 174 cm in flat shoes, black hair falling long and unfussy, brown eyes that miss very little, a wardrobe edited down to perfection. Think a charcoal slip dress, a sharply cut coat, one silver cuff, no logos anywhere. The effect is quietly expensive and never tries too hard, which is exactly the point.

Poised and discreet, she is also the wittiest person at most tables, though she saves the best lines for when they count. She plays the piano most days, Chopin when the mood is thoughtful and Gershwin when it is not, and she will go to almost any opera that promises a good soprano. Architecture walks fill her Sundays; give her a camera and a quiet square and she is content for hours. In her late twenties, she speaks crisp, articulate English at a volume that makes the whole table lean in.

In Mayfair she likes to begin at St George's, Hanover Square, Handel's own parish church, where an evening recital sometimes spills music onto the steps. Five minutes on foot brings you to Jean-Georges at The Connaught, bright and conservatory-like, where she orders simply and makes the conversation the main course. She will point out a cornice you walked past a hundred times and never saw, and you will look for it again tomorrow.
