Meet Margo
Nobody quite knows what Margo is thinking, and she is happy to keep it that way a little longer. Refined, calm and slightly mysterious, she has the air of a 1950s lounge singer between sets, all dark velvet and composure. She is slim, 166 cm, her long dark brown hair straight and lacquer-glossy, her brown eyes giving away just enough. Her taste runs to vintage-inspired elegance: a velvet dress with a narrow waist, a slim satin clutch, a cocktail ring worn on the wrong finger entirely on purpose.
In her early thirties, Margo is the most composed person in any room, and wonderful company once she decides she likes you. She plays the piano, mostly late at night and mostly for herself, favouring Satie and the slow movements of Schubert. Contemporary art is her serious passion, particularly sculpture, and she gardens with surprising devotion, coaxing lavender and a stubborn fig in a sheltered patch of London soil. Her English is calm and beautifully modulated, and her rare laugh is a small reward worth waiting for.
In Mayfair she heads to Mount Street, first to see whatever is showing at the Gagosian on Davies Street, then to The Audley, the old corner pub reborn with a contemporary painted ceiling, and the dining room upstairs, Mount St. Restaurant, where the walls are hung like a private collection. She will choose a table beneath a painting she wants to discuss, order something classic and simple, and allow the night to set its own tempo.
Home for Margo is Knightsbridge; guests usually meet her a short ride away at Mount Street and around Grosvenor Square. She is resting for a few days; the booking page explains how Bella holds a date, overnights included, for her return.

An evening with Margo
Spending an evening with Margo is a little like being told a secret, one sentence at a time. She tends to arrive at the exact minute agreed, calm and immaculate, and suggests starting with a gallery or a quiet drink rather than going straight to dinner. Conversation is where she reveals herself, slowly: the sculpture she would own if money were no object, the Schubert she is learning, the fig tree that finally fruited this summer. She asks careful questions and remembers your answers weeks later. Dinner is classic and unhurried, a single good bottle shared slowly. Later, the mystery never quite disappears, but it warms considerably, and there is something deeply restful about her company, the rare sense of being with someone who never needs to fill a silence.
In Margo's own words
Three questions guests like to ask Margo before a first evening.
Satie's first Gymnopédie. It is slow, a little melancholy and it never asks the listener for anything.
Weight. When something enormously heavy looks as if it might float away, I keep thinking about it for weeks.
Because nothing in a garden can be hurried. You plant it, you wait, and one day there is a fig. I find that very calming.
Notes on Margo
Margo's letters page is still blank, and it stays that way until a real guest writes in. Nothing here is ever written for her.
When a note does arrive, Bella reads every word first; we print a first name and the month, never more, and if Margo wants a note gone, it goes.

Margo, on your calendar.
Send Bella the night, the hour and where you are staying. If Margo is free you get a written yes; if she is not, Bella says so at once and suggests someone with a similar spark.
